LAWRENCE WEINER

OUT FROM UNDER

A piece made especially for Cab Gallery by New York based artist, Lawrence Weiner, is typical of the artist's continuing use of language as signifier. He has created a unique logo employing the familiar colours and shape used by the London Underground. It is sited on the passenger door, where any number of people will confront it; both those who are entering the cab, and those sitting in cars reading it as they pass. Whether they respond to it as art, or pass it by as subtle advertising, only emphasises the ambiguity of text. Without the viewer/observer the piece cannot function.
