DONALD SMITH

Untitled
These two fascinating portraits are from a series by the artist taken
in the same place where the sitter is side-lit by a simple angle-poise
lamp. His subjects are sometimes known and sometimes unknown to him and
are chosen at random, depending on whom he meets when he wants to make
a photograph. The passengers view of the photograph reflects the artists
wishes that the unknown creates a sense of democracy.

Metropolitan
This Artist Book is placed on the rear shelf of
the taxi. It is a photographic project recording encounters with people
and architecture in London. On one side of the page is a portrait (see
'Untitled' above) and on the other is a 'flat iron' style building. These
structures, which narrow at the junction of two roads have been built
to accommodate the ancient and complex layout of london, and have become
an architectural type. These two series document the artists accumulated
visual impressions of a city.
